Chicago Riverwalk weekend itinerary and self-guided walking tour

|

The Chicago Riverwalk area is one of the best places for visitors to experience the best of Chicago, Illinois.

We have enjoyed several visits to Chicago, as various family members of ours have lived in the Windy City at different points. Most recently, we came for a long work trip in downtown Chicago, which allowed me to spend lots of time around the impressive Chicago Riverwalk area.

In this post, I’ll share what I’ve learned about the Chicago Riverwalk, the best things to see and do, and suggestions for a two day weekend itinerary.

What is the Chicago Riverwalk? Where is it located?

The Chicago Riverwalk is a pedestrian promenade along the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, Illinois.

It stretches from Lake Shore Drive Bridge to the East, where the river feeds into the Chicago Harbor, to Lake Street Bridge at the West, where the river splits into North and South Branches.

The Chicago Riverwalk is centrally located in the Loop downtown. Connecting to Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, it’s convenient to visit popular nearby districts like the Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Harbor Park, River North, Streeterville, and the Theater District.

Chicago Riverwalk Weekend Itinerary: Things to See & Do

If your Chicago itinerary is 2 days, the Riverwalk is certainly a great place to base yourself. There is plenty to do for a full weekend here.

It’s also centrally located in Downtown Chicago if you also want to explore nearby hot spots like Millennium Park, the Navy Pier, or Michigan Ave’s Magnificent Mile, for example.

1. Chicago Riverwalk Tours

One of the best ways to start your Chicago Itinerary and get oriented to this area is taking a tour. There are options for a variety of budgets and interests.

Boat Tours of Chicago Riverwalk

Chicago river tour boat Wendella

A river boat tour is definitely among the top things to do in Chicago and a memorable to experience the riverwalk. We enjoyed a river cruise years ago while visiting family.

Departing next to the Wrigley building, you can pre-book either of these top rated tours:
1.5 Hour Guided Architecture Cruise
45 Minute Family-Friendly Architecture Cruise

Tip: An Architecture Boat Tour is included in the Chicago CityPass. If you’re planning to hit other must-see Chicago attractions like Shedd Aquarium, Sky Deck, 360 Observation Deck, Art Institute, or certain museums, the CityPass can save you up to 48% on admission.

Guided Walking Tour

If boats aren’t your thing, get a feel for the district on foot.

History, Culture, and Architecture Walking Tour – People rave about this eco-certified tour, which covers the central Riverwalk area as well as Millennium Park and even includes some tasty local snacks! It lasts 2.5 hours.

For a shorter walking tour in the same area, the Must See Chicago 90 Minute Walking Tour is also highly rated and guides are trained by the Chicago Architecture Center.Chicago riverwalk things to do

Self Guided Walking Tour

If you’re looking for the cheapest option, you can use our self guided map to navigate to the sights and attractions that most interest you.

Another budget-friendly option is a self guided audio tour of Chicago Riverwalk. Since we’d already done a boat tour previously, I opted for the audio tour on our latest trip.

It’s less than a third of the price of guided tours, you can start and stop whenever you like, and you still get the benefit of some guidance and history from the audio stories.

I purchased this bundle of two self-guided Chicago walking tours, which includes the Riverwalk and Millennium Park areas. Just order online, then download the app to access your purchases.

Chicago Self Guided Audio Tour Review

I found it wasn’t necessary to create an account on the app, just enter the code sent in the confirmation email and proceed as a “guest.” It’s important to download the tours int he app while you have wifi. After that, it can work offline.

The Riverwalk tour is designed to start at Du Sable Bridge / Michigan Avenue, in the center of the Riverwalk. Instead, I started where it was more convenient for me: at the Wolf Point end, which worked fine.

The GPS on your phone detects your location and starts the next audio story when you’re in range of a particular attraction, or you can start them manually at any time. The stories are short, and you can do the entire Riverwalk Tour in 40 minutes, maybe less.

2. Rent a Boat or Kayak on the River

kayak on the Chicago RiverRenting a boat or kayak on the Chicago River is a great way to explore the Riverwalk area from a unique perspective.

Visitors interested in renting a boat or kayak on the Chicago River can find several rental companies located on or near the Riverwalk. Some popular options include Chicago Electric Boat Company and Urban Kayaks.

To rent a boat or kayak, visitors can typically reserve online or in person at the rental company’s location. Prices vary depending on the type of boat and length of rental, with hourly, half-day, and full-day rentals available.

It’s important to note that only certain areas of the river allow non-motorized boats, and there may be restrictions on the time of day or specific routes that can be taken. Visitors should also be aware of other boats in the area and wear a life jacket for safety.

3. Visit the Bridgehouse Museum

The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum offers a glimpse into the engineering and history of the movable bridges that span the Chicago River, as well as the role of the river in shaping the city’s development.

The museum features interactive exhibits like a working gear room, where visitors can see the massive gears and pulleys that operate the Michigan Avenue Bridge.

The Museum also provides guided tours of the Michigan Avenue Bridge and hosts a variety of special events and educational programs throughout the year.

4. Chicago Architecture Center

Located on Wacker Drive, just above the Riverwalk, the Architecture Center has a variety of exhibits, tours, and programs that showcase the city’s rich architectural history and contemporary design.

The center’s main exhibit, the Chicago Model Experience, is a 4,250-square-foot scale model of the city that highlights its iconic buildings and neighborhoods. There are also rotating exhibits that explore various themes and aspects of the city’s architecture, such as the role of skyscrapers in shaping the skyline or the history of public art in Chicago.

5. People Watch at River Theater

River Theater Chicago Riverwalk viewpointThe River Theater is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, with its picturesque location along the river between Clark Street and La Salle Drive. The stone steps make a nice place to have a picnic, hang out with friends, or simply rest your feet while strolling the promenade.

Throughout the summer months, a variety of performances and events are hosted in this outdoor venue.

6. Pay Respects at Chicago Vietnam Veterans Memorial Chicago Vietnam War Memorial Park

The Chicago Vietnam Vets Memorial and riverfront park is tucked into the heart of the Riverwalk.

A black granite wall is inscribed with the names of 2,902 Illinois residents who died or were listed as missing in action during the Vietnam-American War. Like the national memorial in D.C., the Chicago memorial is divided into sections that list the names in chronological order based on the date of death or disappearance.

7. Enjoy Art on the MART and other public art displays

Art on the MART is the largest permanent digital art projection in the world. Each season, contemporary artwork is projected across the 2.5 acre river-façade of theMART building.

Best viewed on The Chicago Riverwalk between Wells and Lake Streets, the show starts after dark. See website for details.

Other art installations on the Chicago Riverwalk are “Whispers” by Lawrence Weiner (between Franklin and Lake streets), “Inclusion/Exclusion” by Edra Soto (near Clark Street), “Riverwalk Gateway” by Ross Barney Architects (near the Lake Street Bridge), and “Under the Dock Lighting” by Leni Schwendinger (under the State Street Bridge).

8. Eat and shop at the Community Marketplace

Opened in 2019 between Michigan Ave and Wabash, the Marketplace helps expose visitors to small, minority- and women-owned businesses from surrounding neighborhoods. Vendors include concession stands for food as well as gift shops.

The Community Marketplace on the Riverwalk was not open when we visited in early May, so it may be limited to summer hours.

9. Dine with River Views

Chicago Riverwalk restaurants with seating right on the river include Tiny Tapp & Cafe, City Winery, Beat Kitchen, The Northman Beer & Cider Garden, and Island Party Hut. These are open air eateries, weather permitting.

On the North side of the river are more high end steak houses and seafood restaurants overlooking the water.

For more details, see our Best Chicago Restaurants Near the Riverwalk section below.

10. Go for a walk or a jogskyscrapers and water taxis on Chicago River

This is my personal favorite thing to do on the Riverwalk. As a pedestrian pathway it is safe, clean, and has great scenery to keep your exercise interesting.

Walking one way takes roughly 30 minutes. If you want to add distance to the Riverwalk’s 1.25 mile route, you can continue through the East Gate onto the Lakefront Trail.

11. Ride the Water TaxiChicago water taxi and skyscrapers in background

In addition to the river cruises and boat rentals already mentioned, Chicago also operates a water taxi on the river. There are several routes across the city, two of which have stops at Michigan Avenue.

The water taxi’s seasonal operating schedule varies from year to year depending on weather conditions and other factors. Typically they from mid-April through mid-October.

12. Wander neighboring districts

As mentioned before, the Riverwalk is centrally located downtown so you have easy access to other popular areas.

For example, Du Sable Bridge is the start of the Magnificent Mile. Known for being one of the premier shopping destinations in the world, the approximately one mile stretch of Michigan Ave is home to a wide range of luxury retailers, iconic department stores, renowned restaurants, and hotels.

Just a few blocks South of the Riverwalk begins a stretch of expansive city parks. Among them is the famous Millennium Park with its iconic Bean sculpture, a.k.a. Cloud Gate.

Nearby you’ll also find Chicago’s epic outdoor amphitheater, Crown Fountain, Lurie Garden, an outdoor skating rink and climbing wall in Maggie Daley Park, rose garden, more fountains, and a long stretch of waterfront walkways, harbors, sports fields, and more.

Girl & The Goat,Chicago, IL | Intentional TravelersThe food, which is served in small plates and shared family style, was absolutely fantastic. A culinary adventure. Reservations at the restaurant are sometimes booked out 3-4 months in advance (except for the 11:30pm time slot).

We would have had more pictures of the food but we were too intent on eating them to remember to photograph them. Each dish seemed to be better than the one before. We definitely recommend this place!
