An Intentional Travelers Guide to Unconventional Budget Accommodations by Michelle C. Chang

For as much as I (Michelle) enjoy writing and blogging, I’ve always felt that writing a book was simply too overwhelming. But then came along a topic that really needed writing, and I somehow convinced myself to do it!

Our goal with this blog has always been to inspire and equip our readers to have transformational experiences around the world. But I know that one of the biggest hurdles to traveling is the cost. And one of the biggest expenses for any trip are accommodations.

This book offers a fresh perspective on how to save your travel dollars. It’ll help you crack the code to meaningful, impactful and low-cost trips by tackling one of the biggest trip expenses: lodging.

Over the past four years, we have had to get creative with accommodations in order to keep our living expenses low. Surprisingly, we found that this went hand in hand with having more meaningful, local experiences.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you might have noticed that we use a hodge-podge of different strategies to save money on travel. They’re not things you’ll find in the budget travel guidebooks. (The “budget” hotel sections in travel books is usually too expensive for us, and when given the choice, we prefer not to share hostel dorm rooms with twenty strangers.)

We have a completely different way to travel. It’s an unconventional way. A way that not only saves money so you can travel more, but also gives you a richer experience.

There wasn’t a good resource about the unconventional accommodation strategies we use, so I decided to write one!

An Intentional Travelers Guide to Unconventional Budget Accommodations is now out for Kindle on Amazon!

I wrote this book so you don’t have to go through the trial-and-error stage with these different accommodation strategies. You can piggyback on everything we’ve figured out, and start stretching your travel dollars soon after.

Testimonials for Unconventional Budget Accommodations

Michelle’s guide to Budget Accommodations is comprehensive and action-packed. Read it today, and you’ll save money on your very next trip. My favorite tip: ‘The early bird gets the best birdhouse.’
– Chris Guillebeau, Author of SIDE HUSTLE and THE $100 STARTUP

This is a book for everyone who travels. Michelle shares great examples of the true power of the exchange economy and how it opens so many doors to exciting opportunities. The motivation to try these approaches is saving money, but the real win is the cultural exchange and personal growth with making true connections with people from all around the world.   I loved the examples because anyone can do these, depending on your vacation time, your circumstances, or your comfort level. If this doesn’t change your views of what a vacation can look like (or cost), nothing will!
– Dorene, Travel Life Experiences

We all need to sleep. Michelle is a master at doing it on the cheap without resorting to hostels and budget hotels. From workaways to home exchanges this guide demystifies the art of finding a place to lay your head while having an authentic and transformative travel experience.
– Stephanie Zito, Wandering For Good

Michelle has always been our go-to person for tips on how to travel the world on a budget. Finally in Unconventional Budget Accommodations the world can learn from her brilliance on how to save money and travel.
Heath and Alyssa Padgett

Unconventional Budget Accommodations is a must-have guide for travelers wanting to save money while deepening their travel experiences. Michelle expertly shows you how reducing your travel costs can lead to better travel!
– Cate Brubaker, Small Planet Studio

For anyone who has ever wondered how the heck people can travel for long periods of time without spending tons of money, this book answers those questions! It covers a lot of my own strategies (and even prominently features a Workaway host I recommended to Michelle, the author, and her husband Jedd), and I learned some new strategies, too. I just spent my evening reading it, and now I’m wiser about creative accommodations. Check it out if you’re interested in exploring more of the world and its people in a deep, meaningful way.
